Physician Leadership Forum: Promoting Excellence in Patient Care

As an outgrowth of a Board task force, the AHA launched the Physician Leadership Forum (PLF) in 2011 as a way for physicians and hospitals to advance excellence in patient care.  Recognizing that hospitals now employ approximately 20 percent of all doctors and that better collaboration with physicians is critical to improving health and health care in our communities, the PLF works closely with the medical community to identify best practices to deliver value-based care.  The PLF also offers physicians a unique opportunity to participate in AHA policy and advocacy development process.

Guided by a physician member advisory committee, the PLF pursues four engagement strategies for physicians who work closely with hospitals -- education, quality and patient safety, leadership development, and advocacy and public policy. Over the past year, the PLF has promoted educational programming through webinars, discussion forums, and collaborations with other related organizations, has gathered resources on quality and patient safety issues of specific interest to physicians through the Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence initiative, offered opportunities for physicians and others to provide input to the AHA on policy issues, and held a leadership development session highlighting three innovative examples of team-based care delivery. A bi-weekly e-newsletter also keeps members apprised of the many issues affecting the delivery of care.
