Section for Health Care Systems

AHA's Section for Health Care Systems is a membership section comprised of system corporate headquarters from across the country that meet AHA guidelines for multi-hospital system membership. Section members help shape AHA public policy, political strategies and services on behalf of all hospitals and health systems, with particular attention to unique issues for systems.

AHA meets the unique needs of health care systems by:   

  • Promoting ongoing development and implementation of advocacy initiatives that support the nation's health care systems. 
  • Collaborating on public policy development, seeking direct input on short-term initiatives, long-term strategic issues, and representation on AHA's Regional Policy Boards.
  • Fostering relevant member services for health care systems, including data activities, education programs, research, and technical assistance. 
  • Developing and maintaining liaison relationships with key entities important to health systems, such as state and local hospital associations, national health care alliances, The Catholic Health Association, and the Federation of American Health systems.
  • Creating network opportunities for system peers.


AHA's Section for Health Care Systems is comprised of approximately 245 system corporate headquarters that have at least 90 percent of their owned, leased, managed or religiously-sponsored hospitals as AHA members. No additional dues are paid beyond the component hospitals. 


Health Care System leaders serve a variety of governance roles within the Association. Formal opportunities exist, such as on the Section's Council or as a Regional Policy Board representative, and informal opportunities on ad hoc committees and task forces that address specific policy and emerging issues.


Field Leadership and Performance Improvement

Valuable opportunities are provided for system leaders to interact and network with one another through a variety of special member meetings, conference calls on issue-specific topics, and retreats. These leadership activities afford system executives opportunities to actively discuss key issues with AHA executive staff and learn from system peers. A wide range of Association resources are developed to accelerate performance improvement and support health reform activities.
